Laser
Resurfacing is one of the most dramatic recent advances in the treatment
of wrinkles. After more than two years of performing laser resurfacing of facial lines,
wrinkles and scars, Dr. Sparks is convinced that this procedure is one of the best and
safest technologies to achieve excellent and long-lasting cosmetic results. Dr. Sparks uses the Ultrapulse CO2 laser, a high energy pulsed laser which targets the water in the superficial layers of the skin. With the use of this laser, superficial lines, wrinkles and depressed facial scars may be made to heal smoother and more evenly. Laser resurfacing is performed right in the office using local anesthetic. Under the laser's accurate pulse, the top layers of skin are vaporized and wiped away. The skin tightens right before your eyes as wrinkles, lines and scars are smoothed away although the maximum results are not seen until after six months following treatment. Laser treatment has been shown to be safer, more effective and more predictable than a deep chemical peel. The effects are long-lasting and may be combined with light peels in the office or with home glycolic acid skin care to help maintain results. The risk of side effects such as scarring, infection and lasting pigmentation changes is low. Most patients require only one laser treatment session although some patients, especially those with deeper lines, wrinkles and scars, may benefit from repeating the treatment. Healing usually occurs within 7 to 10 days with some residual pinkness which may persist for several months. The top layers of skin are removed by the laser but usually heal within the first week or two. During this time some scabbing is experienced and most patients stay home. Once the scabbing is healed, makeup may be worn to disguise the residual pinkness which usually lasts for a few more weeks (or months in some patients). Resurfacing is often done by area, such as around the mouth and/or around both eyes for wrinkles, or both cheeks and/or forehead for acne scarring or other scars. Before resurfacing refrain from smoking and using aspirin-containing products for one week. Vitamin C may be helpful to speed healing. After treatment a special dressing is worn for one week which conceals and diminishes scabbing and redness. Oral antibiotics are used to prevent infection along with anti-cold sore medicine if the area around the mouth is treated. Sunscreen is recommended for two months following treatment. It is recommended to wait six months to observe the maximum result before considering retreatment. For additional information visit our Medical Alliance website.
